Youth Services

The teenage years bring unique challenges. I work with young people aged 12+, helping them navigate identity, relationships, academic pressures, and the journey of growing up in today's complex world.

Understanding Young People

Adolescence is a time of immense change - physically, emotionally, and socially.

Young people today face pressures that previous generations didn't, from social media to academic expectations to an uncertain future. It's no wonder many struggle during these years.

Having worked with young people throughout my career, I understand their world and speak their language. I create a space where they can be themselves without judgment, and where their concerns are taken seriously.

Common Challenges

Young people I work with often struggle with:

  • Anxiety about school, exams, or the future
  • Low self-esteem or negative self-image
  • Friendship problems or bullying
  • Family conflicts or changes at home
  • Identity questions and figuring out who they are
  • Social media pressures and comparison
  • Grief and loss
  • Anger management

For Parents & Caregivers

If you're considering counselling for your young person, here's what to know:

  • Confidentiality matters: Young people need to know their sessions are private to open up fully. I maintain confidentiality except where there's a safety concern.
  • You'll stay informed: While session content is confidential, I'll keep you updated on progress and how you can support your young person at home.
  • Your involvement helps: Family support is crucial. I may suggest family sessions or provide guidance on how to best support your teen.

My Approach with Young People

I adapt my approach to suit each young person. Some prefer to talk; others respond better to more creative or activity-based approaches. I meet them where they're at.

  • Respect & Equality: I treat young people as capable individuals with valuable perspectives, not problems to be fixed.
  • Real Talk: I don't lecture or preach. I listen, ask questions, and have genuine conversations about what matters to them.
  • Practical Skills: I teach real-world skills for managing emotions, relationships, and life's challenges.
  • Building Confidence: I help young people discover their strengths and build confidence in who they are.

Getting Started

Many young people are initially reluctant about counselling - that's completely normal. I often find that once they experience a session, they realise it's not as scary as they thought. The first session is simply about getting to know each other and figuring out if we're a good fit.
